Most college students are always looking for a way to help pay for college and scholarships are always a big help. What you may be surprised to learn is that there are actually more than a few scholarships out there that could only be described as rather wacky scholarships – definite departures from your normal, run of the mill academically based awards. Here are just a few examples of unique scholarships, would you qualify for any of these?
Wacky Scholarships for the Vertically Gifted – If you were always the tall kid in high school your height could actually work to your advantage financially once its time to head to college. The Tall Clubs International Scholarship is a $1,000 award and males over 6 feet 2 inches and females over 5 feet 10 inches are eligible to apply. All you really have to do is write an engaging on essay on the subject “ What Being Tall Means to Me”. You can learn more about this scholarship by visiting tall.org
Wacky Scholarships for Skateboarders – This scholarship could help you prove everyone who ever told you off for wasting so much time skateboarding instead of studying wrong. You do need a pretty solid GPA (at least 2.5) to qualify for the Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship but your board skills could net you up to $5,000 for college. Awards are made based on the quality of an essay about the impact that skateboarding has made in tour life though, not on your actual skills. To learn more visit skateboardscholarship.org
Wacky Scholarships for Foodies – If you have given up meat your vegetarian lifestyle may not only help you stay a little healthier but may help you pay for school as well. The Vegetarian Resource Center awards $10,000 worth of college scholarships annually to high school students who have actively advocated for vegetarianism at school and in their communities. Wacky Scholarships for Rand-ites – If you have never read Ayn Rand’s groundbreaking and fascinating book The Fountainhead then it may be a good time to start. The Ayn Rand Institute awards a college scholarship annually to the student who writes the best essay about the classic tome. With a $10,000 prize at stake its certainly worth a shot. And if Anthem is not your cup of tea then there are also similar contests revolving around other Rand books including Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. Learn more at vrg.org/student/scholar.htm
Wacky Scholarships for Trekkies – All those late nights watching Star Trek reruns might finally pay off. The Klingon Language Institute (no really, visit their website at kli.org/scholarship/) awards $500 scholarships to students studying Earth languages. No actual knowledge of Klingon is required but since they are looking for the most “creative and innovative” applicants it might help. You can start brushing up your alien tongue skills at kli.org/tlh/phrases.html.
